Cologne University Magazine: ECONtribute member Indra Spiecker on the future of artificial intelligence

14.05.2025

Artificial intelligence is changing how knowledge is created and decisions are made. However, alongside its enormous potential, it also harbors risks – such as even more misinformation and disinformation as well as the restriction of our civil liberties. With the EU regulation on AI, the European Union is venturing the world’s first legal framework to steer these developments.

In the current issue of the Cologne University Magazine, Indra Spiecker genannt Döhmann, Professor of Digitalization Law and member of ECONtribute at the University of Cologne, explains why such attempts at regulation are important. She sees a central problem in the lack of transparency of artificial intelligence: users can hardly understand the basis on which AI systems make decisions or what values they are based on. So far, so-called explainable AI has also not been a reliable solution in this regard. “Where we are no longer able to control exactly what happens, we need regulation,” says Spiecker.
