Using history as a laboratory to contribute to political-economic theory and empirics has proven immensely valuable. This encompasses the use of historical data to study<br \/>\ninstitutions and human behavior in the historical context but also to assess the validity of theories in economics and political sciences.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose is to create the opportunity for graduate students and early stage researchers to present and discuss their work in an environment especially focused on constructive feedback and support. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sobecker.de\/\">Sascha Becker, Xiaokai Yang Chair of Business and Economics at Monash University<\/a> will hold the keynote.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting welcomes economic and social historians, political scientists, and scholars from related disciplines with a shared interest for causal inference using historical data, inviting papers from a broad range of topics, especially those connected to the broad theme of the workshop.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Potential paper topics include:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Historical political economy and institutional change<br \/>\n\u2022 Labor economics, especially discrimination, migration, and education<br \/>\n\u2022 Innovation and technical change<br \/>\n\u2022 Culture and religion<br \/>\n\u2022 Violence and conflict<br \/>\n\u2022 Urban economics and transportation<br \/>\n\u2022 Environmental and energy economics<br \/>\n\u2022 Causal inference using text-as-data and spatial data<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paper submission:<\/strong><br \/>\nResearchers interested in presenting should send an abstract of max. 500 words or a full paper, as well as a brief (1\u20132 page) CV to <a href=\"mailto:fresh2023@wiso.uni-koeln.de\">fresh2023@wiso.uni-koeln.de<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Early career scholars and researchers from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in the academy are especially encouraged to apply.
