On October 28, 2025, Prashant Garg will deliver a lecture titled “Retrieving and Generating Data using LLMs”. We are pleased to invite you to attend and learn more about how large language models are transforming data-driven research.
In this intensive workshop, we will use large language models (e.g., GPT-4o) to transform unstructured big data into structured insights. We’ll begin by clearly distinguishing two core approaches: retrieval and generation. Retrieval involves processing a large corpus of documents to extract structured information, while generation uses minimal seed inputs to tap into the LLM’s training set for producing structured output. In practice, you’ll be introduced to (i) document-based retrieval techniques for extracting key data points and causal relationships from long and messy documents (e.g., www.causal.claims), alongside (ii) generative methods to construct detailed production networks (e.g., aipnet.io ) and comprehensive keyword dictionaries for text classification (e.g., www.academicexpression.online). Additionally, we will cover practical aspects of prompt engineering, LLM parameter optimization, and essential data handling practices before and after the LLM stage, ensuring you are well-equipped to scale and adapt these tools for diverse data tasks.
Prashant Garg is a PhD student at Imperial College Business School (London, UK) and a visiting researcher at the University of Cambridge. His research combines AI, machine learning, and big data with econometrics and network science. He applies these methods to construct economic knowledge graphs, develop AI-generated production networks, and investigate questions in political economy.
Please note: This event is open to PhD students and postdocs of the Universities of Bonn and Cologne. Other interested researchers from the two universities are welcome to attend as well. If you have registered for the event, but cannot attend, please let us know so that we can better estimate the number of participants. Many thanks!
Register here (open until August 17). If you missed the registration deadline because you were on vacation at that time, please contact David Bruckner (david.bruckner@uni-bonn.de).
