Martin Schmalz (Saïd Business School, University of Oxford) will give a mini course on ‘Finance and IO: why can’t they just get along?’ for doctoral students and postdocs of the University of Cologne and University of Bonn.
This mini course introduces students to a fundamental conflict between financial economics and industrial organization: to be internally consistent, each field must assume the other one doesn’t exist. Most of finance assumes firms are price takers that don’t strategically interact. By contrast, IO recognizes strategic interactions, but assumes away diversification or agency conflicts, or both. The lectures discuss in detail recent studies that have paved the way for an integrated view of finance and IO.
