YEP Mini Course with Esther Arenas-Arroyo (Vienna University of Economics and Business) and Bernhard Schmidpeter (Johannes Kepler University Linz)

Esther Arenas-Arroyo (Vienna University of Economics and Business) and Bernhard Schmidpeter (Johannes Kepler University Linz) will hold a lecture on “Topics in Family Economics”.

This course will give an understanding of some of the issues in contemporary family economics. In the first part of the course, we will explore how economic theory and methods help us to understand how family works, why (and whom) people marry, and the consequences of family wage gaps and inequality. We will review the role of family policies in closing wage gaps and whether they have worked as intended. In the second part of the course, we will focus on the impact of migration on families, health, and crime. Furthermore, we will review the research on immigration enforcement on children and families to discuss what we have learned and are learning about their impacts. We will then conclude with a discussion of policy implications and challenges.
