Moritz Schularick, Principal Investigator at ECONtribute at the University of Bonn, has been awarded the €2.5 million Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize 2022 for his outstanding research.
The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) particularly recognized Schularick’s excellent linking of macroeconomics and economic history and his research on the causes of financial crises and social inequality. His work contributes significantly to a better understanding of todays economic and social challenges, the DFG concluded.

Schularick received his PhD in 2005 at Freie Universität Berlin, where he worked as an assistant professor. He is a professor of macroeconomics at the University of Bonn since 2012, a leading researcher at the Cluster of Excellence ECONtribute and head of the MacroFinance Lab. As a visiting scholar, he has held positions at Cambridge University, New York University’s Stern School of Business, and the Institut d’études politiques in Paris.
Schularick received several prestigious awards for his research, including the Gossen Prize from the Verein für Socialpolitik, a Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council (ERC), and a Schumpeter Fellowship from the Volkswagen Foundation.
