Since 2017 Martin Hellwig is an Emeritus, from his position both as director of the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods in Bonn and Professor of Economics at the University of Bonn. Since 2008 he is a Jelle Zijlstra Professorial Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study. Over his long academic career, Martin has been an Honorary Professor at the University of Vienna. He received the Ernst Hellmut Vits Award of the Universitätsgesellschaft Münster in 2016 and the Max Planck Research Award 2012. He is a Member of Acatech and an honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Science. Martin received his PhD in Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge in 1973.
