Christopher Roth, Professor at ECONtribute at the University of Cologne, has been awarded the 2026 Hermann Heinrich Gossen Award. The award honors a German-speaking economist working in Central Europe, whose work has gained international reputation and renown.
The Verein für Socialpolitik (VfS) has awarded economist Christopher Roth the 2026 Hermann Heinrich Gossen Award. The award, which is endowed with 10,000 euros, was presented on Tuesday, September 15, during the VfS Annual Conference in Innsbruck by VfS Chair Klaus M. Schmidt.
Christopher Roth is a Professor of Economics at the Cluster of Excellence ECONtribute at the University of Cologne. Using innovative empirical methods, he examines how information, expectations, and beliefs shape economic and political decisions.
“Christopher Roth has made outstanding contributions at the intersection of behavioral economics, macroeconomics, political economy, and psychology”, the Verein für Socialpolitik emphasizes in its statement. “His work combines academic originality and methodological innovation with a strong international profile.”
The Gossen Award is awarded every year to honor a German-speaking economist working in Central Europe, whose work has gained international reputation and renown. The aim of the award is to promote the internationalization of economic research by residents of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The most important criterion for the prize is publications in internationally recognized journals.

On September 14, Benjamin Born received the 2026 Carl Menger Award for innovative international research achievements in monetary macroeconomics and monetary policy. Members of the Cluster of Excellence ECONtribute have thus received two of the major awards from the Verein für Socialpolitik this year.
