Erik Hornung is a Professor of Economic History at ECONtribute at the University of Cologne. His research includes transport networks, and one of his studies analyzes how drug-related violence in Mexico has evolved since the NAFTA free trade agreement took effect. We discuss how free trade and drug-related violence are connected, how Mexico became a drug corridor into the U.S. in the first place, and what economic impact Trump’s actions against Latin American drug cartels might have.
