During the CESifo Area Conference on Labor Economics 2023 in Munich associated member Melissa Rubio Ramos was awarded with the CESifo award for her Job Market Paper “From Plantations to Prisons: The Race Gap in Incarceration After the Abolition of Slavery in the U.S.”. Her paper documents the heightend incarceration rates of African Americans after the abolition of slavery in the U.S. Counties that relied more on slave labor with no comparable effect for whites.
Melissa Rubio Ramos is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the University of Cologne. Her main research focus lies in the fields of labor economics, development economics and economic history.
