YEP Mentoring Workshop: Gender Perspectives in Economics Research and Academic Careers with Ieda Matavelli

Ieda Matavelli, Ph.D., will visit the University of Cologne as an IMPACT Fellow. Invited by ECONtribute, she will offer a mentoring workshop for early-career researchers on November 5, 2026. The workshop will combine expert input, interactive discussions, and individual mentoring on integrating gender perspectives into economic research and navigating the academic job market.

About the speaker:

Ieda Matavelli will join Monash University in Melbourne as an Assistant Professor in September 2026. Her research lies at the intersection of development, behavioral, cultural, and labor economics, with a particular focus on how social norms, gender, culture, and institutions shape individual behavior and economic outcomes. Her work relies primarily on field experiments, RCTs, and applied econometric methods to identify causal effects and generate evidence that is relevant for public policy.

What to expect:

Morning workshop (approximately 3 hours)

The morning workshop session covers:

• Gender perspectives in economics research: How can gender perspectives inform research questions, empirical strategies, the interpretation of findings, and the policy relevance of research across different fields of economics?
• Academic careers and the job market: Reflections on navigating academia, including diversity statements, mentorship, career planning, and experiences as an economist working on gender-related topics.

Networking lunch

During a joint lunch, you will have the opportunity to continue the discussion with Ieda Matavelli and connect with fellow early-career researchers in an informal setting.

Individual mentoring sessions

Following lunch, Ieda Matavelli will offer up to six individual one-on-one mentoring sessions (30 minutes each). Whether you would like to discuss your research project, explore new research ideas, receive feedback on your academic career plans, or seek advice on gender-related research in economics, we encourage you to apply for a mentoring session.

Please note that the number of mentoring sessions is limited. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are unable to attend on November 5, but would still like to arrange a mentoring meeting, please get in touch. Depending on availability, additional dates may be possible.
